Child Therapy in Colorado (Play Therapy for Children)

When a child is struggling, it rarely shows up as a neat explanation. It often appears as big emotions, sudden shutdowns, irritability, sleep trouble, school stress, or behavior that feels confusing and exhausting.

Many children do not yet have the words to explain what they feel, what they fear, or what they need. Play is a child’s natural language. In child therapy, play offers a safe way for children to express experiences and emotions that are difficult to put into words.

I provide child therapy for children who need support with anxiety, behavior challenges, life transitions, grief, trauma, and the many forms of stress that can show up in childhood. My work is relationship-centered and child-led, with parent involvement thoughtfully included throughout the process.

Sessions are offered in person in Castle Rock, with parent consultations and some check-ins also available virtually for families across Colorado.

What Is Child Therapy?

Child therapy is a supportive, structured space where children can process feelings, experiences, and stressors with the help of a trained therapist. Depending on a child’s age and needs, therapy may include conversation, creative expression, and play. For many children, especially in elementary school and younger, play therapy is the most effective approach. In each session: your child leads the play, I provide a safe and consistent environment, emotions are reflected and gently supported, and the therapeutic relationship becomes the foundation for healing.

Who Child Therapy Can Help

Families often reach out for child therapy when they notice:

What to Expect as a Parent

Parents are an important part of the process. We begin with an initial intake session to understand your child’s history, temperament, and current challenges. From there, your child will attend regular play therapy sessions in a thoughtfully prepared playroom. Parent check-ins are scheduled periodically to discuss themes emerging in therapy, talk through progress, and provide practical ways to support your child at home.

Common Benefits Families Notice

Every child is different, but play therapy often supports: better emotional regulation and coping, decreased anxiety and worry, reduced intensity and frequency of meltdowns, improved confidence and self-expression, stronger social skills and peer connection, healthier communication with caregivers, more calm, safety, and stability at home.
